Clerk’s Office to give away free trees in honor of Earth Day
The Winnebago County Clerk's Office is going green in honor of Earth Day on April 22, 2023. Winnebago County Clerk Lori Gummow will be giving away tree seedlings on Friday, April 21 to anyone that purchases a birth certificate, death certificate or applies for a marriage license.
"I've done this every year simply because of my passion for the environment, plus it's a fun way to celebrate the beginning of a new season," said Clerk Lori Gummow. "I encourage everyone to think of small ways they can become more eco-friendly this spring!"
Tree seedlings are generously donated by the Winnebago County Soil & Water Conservation District and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Possible varieties include:

- Red maple
- White oak
- Red oak
- Sycamore
- River birch
- Hazelnut
- Lilac
- Highbush cranberry
- Magenta crabapple
A reminder that couples who wish to apply for a marriage license must apply through the website portal or via the courtesy kiosk located in the Clerk's Office, 404 Elm Street, Room 104, Rockford, Illinois. After completing the application, contact the Winnebago County Clerk's Office at (815) 319-4250 to schedule an appointment to receive your license.
