County invests millions in infrastructure, major road improvement projects in 2022

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. – The Winnebago County Highway Department laid out its capital projects and major maintenance items for Fiscal Year 2022 to county board members Thursday evening, April 28, 2022.

At the top of the list are plans to resurface Charles Street from Alpine Road to Mulford Road, as well as widening and resurfacing Latham Road from Meridian Road to Owen Center Road. Other initiatives include resurfacing Prairie Hill Road between IL Routes 2 & 251, replacing the Yale Bridge Road structure over Sugar Creek, and replacing two box culverts on Gleasman Road, one just West of IL Route 2 and the second East of Old River Road. In addition, construction is underway to extend the Perryville Path spanning from Hart Road to IL Route 173.

These projects are budgeted for a total of $5.86 million with a projected county cost of $3,772,000. Other funding sources to make these projects possible come from federal aid bridge and highway funds, economic development and truck access route programs, and transportation enhancement grants.

"We have consistently leveraged the available revenue to obtain the maximum amount of dollars to address the capital needs of our roadway system," said Winnebago County Engineer Carlos Molina.

Other major maintenance items and projects include concrete & asphalt patching, traffic signal maintenance, pipe culvert replacements, and seal coating & striping roads on miscellaneous roads in the county as needed. Work is estimated to cost $3.08 million and targeted to be completed by the end of November 2022.
